I run fishing trips from September to April from Melbourne and in North East Victoria. I’ve pulled together a few ideas for trips that might inspire you depending on your availability and the amount of adventure you’re up for.
I know plenty of beautiful places we could go and I’m pretty flexible, so if you’ve got something in mind let’s chat and I’m sure we can make it work.
Day trip, Yarra Ranges.
2hrs from Melboure. If you dream of escaping the city for a day, breathing in the serenity of nature, and doing something a bit different with your time on the weekend then this mini-adventure is for you.
Meet in Fitzroy for 7am departure (fear not, there’ll be a fresh coffee waiting for you). Hit the water 9:30am. Break for snack at 11am. Lunch @ 1pm. Fed and watered, we'll continue fishing ‘til 4pm. Bevvies and tall tales at the car 5pm. Back to Melbourne 8pm.
Day trip, Mansfield.
3hrs from Melbourne.
A little further afield, this trip ventures to one of my fave streams at the base of Mt Buller. Perfect for those who like alpine starts, mountain air, and the chance to fish a ripper trout stream.
Meet in Fitzroy for 6am departure (fear not, there’ll be a fresh coffee waiting for you). Hit the water 9:30am. Break for snack at 11am. Lunch @ 1pm. Afternoon fishing ‘til 4pm. Bevvies and tall tales at the car 5pm. Back to Melbourne 8/8:30pm.
Weekender, King Valley.
3.5hrs from Melbourne. Early season Sept-Dec only.
One of my favourite early season fishing spots, the King Valley is a gem place renowned for Italian varietals, friendly locals and chilled vibes. This trip is designed for those who fancy sipping vino one day and catching trout the next.
Meet either in Fitzroy (if you need a lift up) or in Whitfield. Hit the water 10am. Break for snack at 11:30am. Lunch @1pm. Afternoon fishing ‘til 5pm. Prosecco at the car 6pm. Back to camp or own accommodation 7pm.
If you’d like to camp, I highly recommend staying at Gentle Annies Camping Reserve. I always stay there — it's super friendly with great facilities.
4.5hrs from Melbourne.
I plan to move here one day because it's a mecca for outdoor adventure that's also home to great food and wine. This trip is designed to give you a real taste of some of the North East's best waters.
Meet either in Fitzroy (if you need a lift up) or Bright. Day 1: Hit the Ovens/Cobungra River by 10am. Day 2: Hit the Kiewa/Victoria River by 10am. The day itineraries for both rivers would be similar to King Valley trip.
If you'd like to stay in the region my friends own an awesome holiday house in Bright with a spa ... perfect soothing sore limbs after a long day on the water.
Big adventure, Anglers Rest or Eskdale.
5 - 6hrs from Melbourne. Minimum booking of 4 people required.
Designed for the dreamers, adventurers and anti-naysayers, these trips are truly epic experiences where you’ll get to fish and hang out in some of the most remote and beautiful country in Victoria. You need to set aside a bit more time for these trips, but boy are they worth it. Comfortable cabins or accommodation can be arranged for these trips.
Day 1: Hit the Bundarra for a day
Day 2: Explore the Big River for a day
Day 3: Smash Middle Creek or the main Mitta Mitta for a day.
If you want to stay in the region, my friend Helen Packer offers the most incredible accommodation at The Willows in the Bundarra Valley. Honestly, it's a slice of paradise.
